Updated: Oct 15, 2023

Wat Pariwat: A Glimpse into Bangkok's Eccentric Temple, often called "The David Beckham Temple" - Find out why? And most important, find out where! (UPDATED)

Wat Pariwat, located along Bangkok's Chao Phraya river, is not your typical Thai temple. While many temples may seem similar, Wat Pariwat stands out, captivating visitors for hours with its unique blend of traditional and modern elements. In this article, we'll delve into the temple's intriguing details, its connection to pop culture, and why it's a must-visit for anyone in Bangkok.

1. Wat Pariwat's Unique Charm:

Bangkok is home to a plethora of temples, each with its own story and significance. However, Wat Pariwat offers a narrative that's distinct from the rest. This sets the temple apart from the many others in the city:

  • Bangkok's temple landscape is vast, but Wat Pariwat offers a different perspective.

  • Located in Bangkok's lesser-explored southern suburbs, its allure isn't just its location but its distinctive artistry.

  • Beyond its main building and funeral temples, the courtyard unveils a world of vibrant and eclectic shrines.

2. Merging Pop Culture with Sacred Traditions:

Temples are typically associated with age-old traditions and religious practices. Yet, Wat Pariwat seamlessly blends the old with the new, creating a unique fusion of pop culture and sacred traditions.

  • Wat Pariwat's charm lies in its unexpected blend of the sacred and the contemporary.

  • Vibrant hues, diverse materials, and a plethora of figures create a visual spectacle.

  • Amidst the traditional depictions, one might spot global icons, making it a temple that resonates with all ages.

3. Discovering Pop Culture Icons at Wat Pariwat:

While many temples showcase religious figures and stories, Wat Pariwat offers a delightful twist. Here, amidst the traditional, you'll find familiar faces from pop culture. (I have tried to list all of them, but I honestly got lost in counting all of them :D I will try again, once the second temple finished it's renovation)

  • Embark on a fun quest: identify the myriad of pop culture figures seamlessly integrated into the temple's design.

  • From global leaders like Obama to fictional characters like Dobby, the temple is a treasure trove of surprises.

  • These elements, far from being mere decorations, serve a deeper purpose: bridging the gap between tradition and the younger generation.

4. The David Beckham Enigma:

David Beckham and a temple might seem like an unlikely combination. Rumor has it, that it all started with a monk building a shrine, incorporating a small David Beckham figurine in the back of the shrine, hiding amongst all other traditional figurines holding the shrine.

What was the monk's motivation? ... he was a huge David Beckham fan!

  • Among its many wonders, Wat Pariwat is often associated with a golden statue of David Beckham.

  • This unique tribute, though small, has garnered significant attention, earning the temple its modern moniker.

  • While it's a nod to contemporary culture, it's also a testament to the temple's adaptive spirit.

The David Beckham statue is difficult to find tho! If you are tired of searching for it, please continue reading ;)

5. Finding the David Beckham statue at Wat Pariwat?

Where is the David Beckham statue in Wat Pariwat? The quest to find the David Beckham statue at Wat Pariwat can be quite the adventure. Tucked away from the main temples, this statue has become a sought-after sight for many visitors. Here's a guide to help you navigate your way to this hidden gem.

Where is David Beckham located at Wat Pariwat?:

The David Beckham statue, despite its fame, remains a challenge for many to locate. After numerous visits, I realized it's not in the two main temples at the entrance. Instead, it's housed in an older temple situated at the rear of the Wat Pariwat complex. Contrary to some online articles, the monks I encountered weren't hesitant to grant access to the Beckham shrine. If you find the main red door at the temple's end closed, fret not. There's a secret way to reach the second floor: the elevator on the ground floor. šŸ¤«

How to get to the David Beckham Statue at Wat Pariwat:

  • Start by locating the Old Temple at the back of the Wat Pariwat Complex.

  • Check if the main door on the second floor is open. If it's locked:

    • Use the side entrance on the right to access the ground floor.

    • Head to the elevator located on the opposite side (left).

    • Press the "2" button and ensure the door is closed behind you.

    • Once on the second floor, the David Beckham Statue can be found on the right side of the shrine at the end of the hallway.

Remember, while Wat Pariwat offers a unique experience, it's essential to maintain respect in terms of attire and behavior.
