National Museum Bangkok: A Journey into Thailand’s Past

📍National Museum Bangkok 🎟️ THB 200 🕐 8:30-16:00 (Closed on Mo. & Tu.)

The Bangkok National Museum, situated in the vicinity of the Boworn Sathan Mongkol Mansion or the 'Front Palace' (Wang Na), is a testament to Thailand's rich history and heritage. Constructed in 1887 concurrently with the Grand Palace, this mansion once served as the royal abode for five prince viceroys.

However, after the position of prince viceroy was abolished by King Rama V, the mansion became available. Subsequently, the king ordered the relocation of “the royal museum” from Sala Sahathai Samakhom or the Concordia Hall in the Grand Palace to this location, making it a hub for ancient artifacts and antiques.

In 1934, King Rama VII designated the entire Phra Maha Monthien Palace Group of Boworn Sathan Mongkol Palace as the national museum for Bangkok, naming it the “Phranakorn National Museum.” The exhibits are organized into various themes:

  • Gallery of Thai History: This section, located in the Gallery of Thai nation history hall and Sivamok Phiman Throne hall, offers insights into the evolution of Thai people from ancient times through the establishment of the Sukhothai state. It covers significant events from the Sri Ayudhaya, Thonburi, and the reign of the Chakri dynasty of the Rattanakosin era.

  • History of Fine Arts: Housed in the inner court of the royal Vimanmek Mansion, this gallery showcases masterpieces of Fine Arts. Exhibits include traditional handicrafts, musical instruments, ceramics, clothing, textiles, wood carvings, regalia, and weaponry.

  • History of Thai Art through Generations: This section, located in the art historical exhibition section, archaeological Mahasurasihanart building, and “Prapas phipithaphan” the royal museum, displays the evolution of archaeological arts in Thailand. It covers various periods, including Thawarawadi, Srivijaya, ancient idol, Lopburi, Sukhothai, Lanna, Ayudhya, Rattanakosin, and more.

  • The Wang Na Historical Sites: This segment highlights the exquisite Rattanakosin architecture, such as the Bhutthaisawan Throne Hall, the enshrine house of Phra Buddha Si Hing Buddha image, the Red House, and many other historically significant structures.

Unfortunately, several areas of the Museum where closed during my time of visit, but Bangkok has invested a lot of funds into modernizing several public museums which is great news if you are about to visit this Museum now or in the near future when all areas are open & renovated!

Delve deep into the realms of myth and splendor at the Erawan Museum. Known prominently for its iconic three-headed elephant sculpture, this marvel isn't just an architectural masterpiece but also a repository of rich cultural stories.

Standing as the world's first and largest hand-carved sculpture, this giant elephant is more than just an awe-inducing figure. It's a testament to the intricate craftsmanship of Thai artisans, with its exterior lined meticulously with copper sheets, each carefully placed to perfection.

The foundation of this colossal sculpture is deep-rooted in mythology. "Erawan," representing water, clouds, and the rainbow, is revered as the sacred elephant bearing 33 heads. As legends go, Erawan was the chosen vehicle of Indra, the highest god in Hinduism. This celestial elephant had the power to traverse between Earth and Heaven. With Indra, Erawan took upon the role of a guardian, ensuring the well-being of humans. While legends speak of Erawan’s 33 heads, artistic renditions often depict it with three for aesthetic coherence.
